Animal Sponsorship: Cape Porcupine

Cape porcupines—named for the crest of white-tipped bristles around their necks—are native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are more closely related to guinea pigs than they are to North American porcupines!

They typically weigh 40-66 pounds and eat plants such as roots and bark. Their quills are striped black and white, and they have a group of hollow quills on their tails which rattle when shaken. The quills shed upon impact, embedding in would-be predators.

Your animal sponsorship helps the Minnesota Zoo Foundation support the Minnesota Zoo’s efforts to make a difference for wildlife here and around the world.

Your sponsorship package will be mailed within 10 business days and will include:

  • A 5x7 print of a painting created by a Cape porcupine
  • A personalized Cape porcupine animal sponsorship certificate
  • A QR code and URL that provides you with exclusive access to the Cape Porcupine Animal Sponsorship webpage that includes:
    • Video of the Cape porcupine creating the art print
    • Cape porcupine quiz
    • Cape porcupine fun facts, photos, conservation info, and more
